“Dopamine.”
“Gen Z.”

No.

Those are symptoms.

1. Identity Drift — The Collapse of Layer 1

Identity used to form around stable, local anchors:

• family

• community

• mentors

• real-world roles

• the shared reality everyone agreed existed

Platforms replaced those with:

• external validation loops

• infinite social comparison

• algorithmic identity-shaping

• synthetic status hierarchies

You cannot build a coherent self when your reference point updates every 30 seconds.

Teenagers didn’t “lose their identity.”
The identity layer was removed from the system.
They’re trying to stand upright in a world with no floor.

Instead of algorithmic identity-shaping, they could have engineered stabilizers:

Give the user a floor.
Give them a consistent self across time.

They built the opposite — and the layer collapsed.

2. Reference-Frame Drift — No Stable Worldview

There used to be a frame — not perfect, but stable:

Objective reasoning, facts, logic, reality-based analysis

“Here’s reality.
Here’s truth.
Here’s how to reason.
Here’s your place in the world.”

Then we replaced it with:

• relativism

Instead of relativistic chaos:

• Ground-truth labels

• Logic & reasoning standards

• Stable curricular scaffolding

They built exactly that — and adolescents paid for it.

4. Drift Detection Failure — No One Was Measuring the Collapse

Every supervising institution failed simultaneously:

• parents

• schools

• platforms

• governments

• mental-health systems

None had:

• monitoring

• correction loops

• longitudinal measurement

• feedback mechanisms

• early-drift detection

When drift isn’t measured, drift accelerates.

The crisis didn’t appear suddenly.
It appeared uninterrupted.

Kids used to be anchored by:

• follower counts

• numerical social worth

When external validation becomes quantized, the psyche fractures.

Humans aren’t designed to be scored in real time.
